Silence is the last thing you want at your party. It’s deadly. The buzz of conversation, the clink of toasting glasses, lively music - these sounds signal a fun event.
It’s easy to plan the music and serve food and drinks. But how do you stimulate conversation?
There are a few subtle tricks that a clever host can do:
1. At a cocktail party, separate the beverages from the food. Then, guests have a purposeful move within the party. Conversation goes flat when people feel “stuck” in place. Movement sparks conversation because people come in contact with new faces.
2. At a seated dinner party, it’s a little different. There’s initial chit chat as guests arrive and get to know each other. Then, when seated and the guests begin to eat, a natural lull occurs. One trick is to place open-ended questions in each place card. Make them easy. Make them fun. Tell us about your dream vacation? If you could go back in time, where would you go? What would you do? You get the idea.
