How To Live 2010 In The Moment by Christie B

childsmellingrose smallBelieve it or not, a new year is already on us.  I don’t know about you, but I’m finding that time seems to be going quicker and quicker. So here are some of the things that I’ve been pondering upon in order to make the most of the minutes, hours and days that lie ahead.

Focus On the Here and Now
Too often when we are with someone or doing something, instead of being fully in that moment we are already at our next appointment or thinking about what we are doing that evening or the next week. I have found the biggest regrets are not taking the most out of the present opportunity.  We need to learn to “slow down time” by extracting every ounce out of the minutes that we have. Take a moment to really look at how someone clearly is seeing something; listen to what they are really saying and how they are actually feeling. This requires you being “in that thing” and not into the next thing. A moment fully embraced is a moment fully lived.

Don’t Accept the Lie that You Don’t Have Time
Finding something to do that refreshes you can often be so simple and easy to accomplish, that often we overlook them. Whilst we all need holidays to rest and recharge the batteries, it is also important to have a little joy in the everyday. As the saying goes “all work and no play, makes us dull in every way.” What I find refreshing can be so remarkably simple and affordable. For example:  the fragrance of a new soap or bar gel; walking on grass in my bare feet; that revitalizing feeling of a cold shower after a warm one; listening to some favourite music and having a nice cup of tea out of a china cup; and the list goes on.
It’s not mind-blowing stuff I understand, but life changing nevertheless. My life changing.  The simple act of sitting down with a nice cup of tea can take 10-15 minutes, but brings a new perspective to a busy day. What are some of the simple things you can apply, even now as you read this to revive yourself?

Don’t Worry
Get acquainted with the fact that possibly more than 90% of your worse possible fears will never come to pass, so don’t worry. How many times have you worried about things and wasted precious time only to realise a day, a week or a month later that there was no need to do so?  It’s in our best interest to nail this once and for all in our hearts. It will lead to more peaceful life for us and those around us.

Keep Going
Just because you have failed at something before doesn’t mean you can’t have another go. Maybe last year you decided to get fitter.  Instead of starting slowly and having achievable monthly goals, did you give up when you realized you couldn’t become an elite athlete in a month? Perhaps something in your head told you not to even try. I find myself almost on a daily basis picking myself up and starting again. Sometimes the reason we don’t succeed is because there could have been a better time to start.

As we look forward to 2010, let’s be really present in the moments we have together, let’s worry less and enjoy more of each other. And let’s stand up and brush ourselves down and try something that we wanted to do, regardless of how many times we have tried it before. Together we can have a great year.
