Combatting The Fat Crisis Christie B

obese girl

A topical debate for parents at the moment is obesity in children. It’s become a worldwide issue, but Australia is leading with some scary statistics.

This week’s Herald Sun newspaper reported that in Victoria alone, 35 children are being treated for obesity-related diabetes and that some children are weighing over 150 kilograms.

Parents need to take full responsibility for their children’s diet, lack of exercise and sedentary lifestyle.

Parents often complain that their children won’t eat their vegetables, that they won’t listen when you tell them to get off the internet. Who’s the adult in this relationship?

With two parents working, and parents feeling too tired to argue with their children, this has paved the way for children to dictate to adults how it goes.

Take away meals should be treats not a daily staple and kids will mimic how their parents eat. Placing boundaries rather than ruling out time in front of the TV, Internet, Xbox is a better way to go. Letting kids know they can have twenty minutes for sedentary activities enables them to use their time effectively.

Sometimes the last thing a parent feels like doing is playing sport with their child, but some type of physical activity as a family, ie riding a bike, going for a walk to the park, playing soccer or cricket, encourages kids to be active.

The stats are terrifying, but it’s the parents who have the responsibility to reer their child in the way they should go.

I suspect that not too many of us do too much physical activities, as we call it now, but there were things people did before my time and even after that. We can have the children work alog side of us, if we have the yard space, or even make a community garden. We can help each other that way with our activities and help others butify with a flower garden or vegetable garden. We can sell to local stores or have a give away to poor folks. We can collect cans at home or go walking and pick them up and keep the streets clean to use the money to go to a group dinner and a group trip. There are also lables you can go door to door to collect for school playground equipement, so there would be some walking in this activity, with parent suppervision, of course. You could start a door to door clothing drive for your school for the grammar, high, and college ages, so those people could just walk into a certain room even on Saturdays, so they won't be embarrased to get the clothing they need. There are so many like me that go without clothing they need, bacause either their parents spend the money on drugs, alcohol, or their clothes or they just can't make ends meet. Please make this effort, so these kids can go to school with their heads up instead of always being alone because other kids won't hang around with them, because they don't have the right clothes.
