Getting Motivated and Setting Goals
We all struggle with motivation at times and sometimes writing goals is the last thing we think to do. Claire McFee in a two part series gives tips on how it can be done.
1. Visualise your future - imagine you’re in your ideal future and how that makes you feel. For example if your dream is to get a particular qualification, then picture yourself on graduation day, or if your dream is to quit smoking and get fit, then picture yourself, in shape exercising without panting for air.
2. Write down your goals - to get started, get a piece of paper and jot down what you would like to be doing in the near future.
3. Break it down - break down your goals into smaller more easily achievable goals, always keeping the bigger picture in mind. That way your task won’t seem so daunting. If you don’t succeed in one of your mini-goals, you won’t be so disappointed, as it is only a small part, and you can try again using a slightly different tact next time.
4. Get your hands on all the resources you can - talk to your family, colleagues and friends about your area of interest and see if they have any information they can give you. Go to the library/do an internet search/sign up for the relevant course. See what others have done before you, so that you can learn from their mistakes and save yourself lots of time.
5. De-clutter your house - as they say, a tidy house is a tidy mind. Many of us forget how important it is to have a clear mind to use our time efficiently, and we all know how time is precious. So, if you are guilty of this, then now’s the time to do something about it!
6. Again, get it down on paper - if you have a zillion and one things cluttering up your mind, then you need to free up that space, which will in turn create new found energy for you to use elsewhere. To get rid of it you simply need to get it down on paper and keep it in the one place.
7. Remind yourself - print out some nice looking quotes and/or your goals in places that you come into contact regularly, to remind you of your future aspirations. These reminders will help keep you motivated until you get there.
8. Donate your time - offer to help others where you can. Giving your time will boost your self esteem whether you need help in that area or not.
9. Pass on your new ideas and help motivate others - take note of others around you and whether they would benefit from some help from you and what you have learned.
10. Be more positive around your children - even though you may be stressed out from your busy life, don’t feel as if spending time with your kids is a chore. Take notice of how simply your kids see life, and try to do the same occasionally, if only for a minute!
