Your Time Out

Women wear so many hats and fill so many roles there never seems to be enough time.  Contributor Chrissi Ellankoon shares how time out is a necessity that needs to be scheduled in.

We wear so many hats and fill so many roles there never seems to be enough time.  The one consistent theme I have seen in the lives of most of my female friends is that when it comes to managing time, women seem to squeeze so much into one day it makes my head spin.  However one of the things most women never seem to do is have a regular time which is dedicated to them.

With all your commitments and responsibilities where is that time, time which is regularly set aside just for you?

Often I become angry and frustrated when I spend long periods of time doing things for everyone else.  Work and relationship demands become too much and all of a sudden I am climbing the walls.  My frustrations rear their ugly head usually with the little things and very soon they get blown out of all proportion, I end up feeling used and stressed and at worst case I can even shut down.

The prevention for these situations is having regular “time out”.  It might only be a couple of hours a week, but it is time I spend doing something that relaxes and energises me.  How you spend your “time out” is totally up to you but the guidelines are that it needs to be something you enjoy and come away from feeling refreshed and ready to face the world.  It might be a weekly coffee in your favourite café with your favourite friend.  It might be a morning jog, or an evening each week devoted to your hobby.  Whatever it is make sure it is scheduled into your diary.  One of the keys to getting the most out of life and sustaining your workload is to keep your “time out” regular, you need to selfishly guard this time.  You need to view it just as you would an important commitment or appointment, don’t just rub it out of the diary to make time for another meeting.

If we know the benefits of “time out” why aren’t more women doing it?  It comes down to seeing our selves as important and deserving of a time out.  Often we see all the things that need to get down and feel guilty about spending time on our selves.  The truth however is the total opposite.  By giving ourselves a regular break and a time of relaxation we become more effective at what we do.  I know that when I do take my time out, I am able to get so much more out of my week and my attitude is so much better because I have some “me” time to look forward to.

Time out is really not a choice but a necessity if we are going to get everything out of life that we want to.  Take some time this week to look at your own schedule, make sure that somewhere in there is some time set aside to do something you love, something that will refresh and energize you.  I guarantee that you will feel better for it and get more out of our week.
