Energising Your Time
Unlike generations past, today’s woman has more options and more choices and as a result more demands on her time and energy.
If she is married and has children, her role increases considerably. She often wears many hats: wife, mother, worker, nursemaid, counsellor, advisor, lover, housekeeper, volunteer and the list goes on. Then there is the need to stay fit, prepare healthy meals, spend quality time with family and friends and for relaxation. How do women juggle all of the above and still keep it together and enjoy the opportunities and rewards that are available? There is so much written about work/life balance these days. Some women seem to have it more together than others and fit in everything whereas others struggle with just managing their time in general. What is the secret to achieving and juggling well?
There is a story about a woodcutter who struggled to get as many trees cut as some of his associates. He determined to get up earlier in the morning and work later through the day. As much as he tried he could not keep up and as each day passed he seemed to get less done. And then one day someone asked him “Woodcutter, why don’t you take time to sharpen your saw?” And do you know his answer? “I can’t, I don’t have time!”
He totally missed the point. If we are to achieve the daily demands on our time then we need to take time out to sharpen our saw. By that I mean taking time for ourselves and ensuring we get the rest we need and the correct foods for our body instead of the usual ‘grab and eat-on-the-run’ type of meal. Not only that, but also the correct intake for our minds as well. There’s another saying “garbage in, garbage out” – what we read and watch, we take in and it reflects in our lives in the way it is lived out. If we watch or read things that sap us of our energy, it shows. The same with things we eat – if our diet is not right for us it will also sap our energy. And energy is so important if we are to achieve all the things we need to get done.
Have you noticed how on days when you feel alive, awake, refreshed and full of energy you seem to get so much more done than on days when you feel listless and struggle to get anything finished?
I know it seems crazy to take time out for you when there is so much to do. It seems the last thing we should do when we have such busy schedules. The reality is that in making sure we get rest, exercise and fun, we generate the energy to do the things that must be done, and often more quickly. Just as a battery is ‘rested’ from its duty and recharged, so must we do the same for our bodies and minds.
Have a look at those you feel seem to get a lot more completed in life than you do. They have the same number of hours in their day so why do you think that is? Have a look at the type of person they are, their personality, their outlook on life. Are they bright, bubbly, a happy person to be around? Does just being with them make you feel the same way? And what about those who complain they get very little done? What is their demeanour like? Is it possible there’s a connection as to what gets done?
There’s another saying ‘want something done; give it to a busy person’. And usually those people aren’t grumpy when asked if they can fit something else in, they just respond with a smile and a chirpy greeting ‘of course’. So, are you someone with tons of energy and the time to get things done? If not, then perhaps you need to reassess your life and where the hours are being spent, and take some time out to re-energise, rest and get refreshed.
