Man Are You Too Scared To Dance 2007/05/22 03:49
I have to organise regular social events for singles and married couples. And recently have been coordinating a night of dance including a one hour dance class instruction followed by a great night of dancing. Many men have come up to me saying either there's no way they would go or just plain scared and needing reassurance they won't be the only male there. Once upon a time a man would love to dance with a woman, lead her across the dance floor - have we completely lost this art? On a wider issue, are men scared to take the lead on the dance floor of life and therefore women have to? What are your thoughts?

I think that most men are crazy in this area. I think that I really fell in love with my wife when we danced all night at a bush dance. There is nothing quite like dancing arm in arm to some great music. By the way....call me old fashioned but I like to be able to hold my dance partner rather than see her on the far side of the room.

I also think that many men need a swift kick up the behind in this area. For some reason the joy of being romantic has been lost on many of them. Sending flowers, dancing, writing love letters (not emails), making something special with your hands are things that I did to sweep my wife off her feet.....so if there any guys here....there's a few tips for you LOL!

I must agree that the art of romance and even just doing little things that mean so much for the special someone in your life seems to be fading away. It is very unfortunate - I would think that having someone just do something small to make you feel special once in a while would be a wonderful feeling? I sometimes wonder if the thinking they had say 50 years ago on this subject wasn't such a bad thing!?

I had an interesting conversation with a male about dancing the other night, after having spent a night with a group learning to dance. His words were "I don't dance latin as I feel I'd look sissy." After persisting for an explanation, it came down to confidence and what other mates would think of him dancing. Australian culture can be pretty blokey, sports mad and an appreciation for the arts can be seen as "sissy". Other cultures there isn't this issue, such as European. What's your experience of culture and expectations on male behaviour?

There's a great movie with Richard Gere in it called "Shall We Dance?" It's all about the culture of breaking the male phobia to dance....it's pretty romantic too!
